Who is the breadwinner in your household?
When answering this question, the first thing people think of is the male in the house. Whether it is your dad, uncle, or grandfather. And people have grown up with this idea of the male being the man of the house, the alpha, or better yet the king of the jungle. However, in today’s world things are changing and the new alpha is now the woman. Whether that be the breadwinner, the boss, CEO, etc.
In this case, Lily Martinez is the queen of her beautiful circus.
Lily Martinez is a mother of 4 children, owner of 2 dogs, a creative, wife, and boss lady. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise in Downtown Los Angeles with a fashion degree back in 1997. A year later, she joined Mattel. “Working at Mattel, one of the largest toy companies in the world was such an amazing experience,” she said via email.
She worked her way up to Designer, Senior Designer, Manager, Senior Manager, until she became the Creative Director for Barbie. She managed, designed, and consulted for Barbie’s toy line. One of the biggest accomplishments was designing the current sculpture of the Ken doll which is on toy shelves at this moment.
With so many wonderful career opportunities, she has also managed to be the best mother and wife she can be to what she calls her beautiful circus. “There is no balance. That’s the gold-put-after-the-rainbow every woman seems to be looking for. But it just doesn’t exist, at least in my experience,” she said. However, one thing she has learned is to accept things for what they are. “I have consciously decided to accept the good, the bad, and the everything in-between. I have accepted that sometimes I have a home cooked meal and sometimes it’s leftovers, or even worse $5 Little Caesar’s pizza. I have accepted that sometimes my nails are done and sometimes they are not.”
During her years working at Mattel and after having her first son, she became the breadwinner of her household. “The only reason why I continued on with my career after I had my first son and my husband stayed at home instead of me was a mere practicality, not ambition. My job was more stable and I had a better income. But our children always came first and still do,” she said.
“I think it’s great when men are willing to share the responsibilities that usually are categorized as women’s duties,” she expressed. Her husband is a very strong individual “that doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone or cares what anyone thinks for that matter if he is a stay-at-home dad.” They both respect what the traditional lifestyle might be in society but whatever works for her family is more important.
Lily decided to leave her corporate job earlier this year to focus her time on motherhood and working on creative projects at home. She manages her website,The Beautiful Circus, where she shares her baking recipes, fashion tips, beautiful family, and everything in between.
At the end of the day, Lily is truly passionate about doing what works best for herself and her family–no matter what anyone has to say. Just like her favorite quote by Dr. Suess “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” And if she could change the world, she said,”I would want more women leaders. The world would probably be a more peaceful place to live in.”
